Working From Home : The Benefits For An Interior Designer
Because I work as a designer of furniture and household godos working from home really suits me perfectly. It comes in very handy having my studio at home when I’m developing dimensions and checking measurements . Looking at a bed in a warehouse or factory just isn’t the same when you live in a two-floor Victorian conversion . Me and my husband, who is a business consultant and mentor, got the keys to our new home about twelve months ago, moving in with our cocker spaniel Patch. I love the way our home has been adapted for modern living, with making the máximum use of space with bright wall and floorcoverings. Our apartment is a blank canvas. It’s also a good social space, being nice and long, with the living room at one end and the kitchen and patio at the other. The bedroom and my work station are on the floor below. The rooms feel airy and light and are furnished with key pieces designed by me . I like to mix my pieces with classics such as works by Matisse, Picasso and Jean Cocteau, and vintage pieces, accentuating with colour highlights. I think that the way your home is lit is very important so I always try to use diffused lighting, especially lighting from scented candles , including my favourite candles from Yankee candles and Heyland and Whittle. I admit it is hard to switch off from the job I am working on at any given time and take my camera with me wherever I go. I always seem to be travelling with work which means I’m always snapping details – a doorway, piece of marble, teapot – anything that catches my eye. I have just launched a new range of luxury furniture. The furniture reflects my desire for simplicity, high-quality materials and good craftsmanship. It consists of a solid oak extending dining table, accompanying bench and chairs, a range of storage cabinets and a nest of tables with matt lacquer surfaces in muted shades of grey.
