One Woman’s Horse Photography Business

Horses can do many things, but can they pose? Unless, of course, you are this lady equestrian photographer of Pasadena, California, whose horse portraits are trotted out for show in such homes as those of famous celebrities. She started out with a camera borrowed from Pasadena City College, and after graduation her motor home office has followed tracks and shows in many places, giving her the chance to photograph the Olympics in Montreal and British Princess Anne. After graduating from Pasadena High School, she went onto the community college, where she photographed horses for practice. From age 10, she practically just crossed the street to get to the Eaton Canyon Riding Stables. The stables were source for her canvas, where she did her homework with her borrowed camera on the weekends. Her life changed after she sold her first horse photo, and art, music, and journalism were put on the back burner.

 

Her first two mentors hired her after a horse show in Santa Barbara, and they made her focus and pose horses at shows, tracks, and state fairs all over the country thereafter. Her second job was with another photographer pair and involved only shows in California. With her Swedish camera and German lens, she now controls her business, with a little help from her mother.

 

Her photos usually consist of exciting six-foot jumps or nosing out a competitor in a race or show. But she can also get them on all fours to pose for formal shots. And there are some real hams among the horses. She discovered that some of them seem to take one look at the camera and assume the proper pose like perking up their ears and lifting their heads high. Then again, there are horses that could care less about being photographed. Obtain further advice on famous oil painting artists and the subject of paintings.

 

A good horse photo takes some doing. When it comes to hunters and jumpers, people expect shots taken mid-air, when their legs are folded at just the right angle. As for Tennessee walkers, famous photos are those with their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. A low slide is the best angle for a stock horse, and high head and legs is the best angle for a saddle horse. Some of her acclaimed works are of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that groups are scrambling to have multiplied. It would be best to snap a picture when their forelegs are pointed away from their bodies. Their own beauty with the elaborateness of the riders uniform makes them rich material for photographers.

 

Photography has enabled her to see many celebrity horse lovers. Conversations with royalty are another perk of photography. At the Montreal Olympics she was able to photograph Princess Anne, which brought her to the side of the Queen. She asked Queen Elizabeth if it made her anxious to see her daughter taking high jumps, and the Queen answered in the affirmative. Even though she spends her free time swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even riding a horse, she felt she needed to switch up her horse photographs with fork lift pictures.

 

No posing is necessary with fork lifts.
