A biscuit joiner is a relatively simple tool to operate, as it is really designed to do one primary task: cutting slots for biscuits. While the Ryobi JM82 Biscuit Joiner is one of the least expensive biscuit joiners on the market, it has some very thoughtful features. When compared to similar tools that cost twice the price, the Ryobi JM82 Biscuit Joiner stacks up very nicely. It does have a couple of quirks, but once you get the hang of adjusting the tool, it does a very nice job. Using the Ryobi JM82 Biscuit Joiner is pretty straight-forward. It has pre-set depth adjustments for cutting #0, 10 or 20 biscuits. If the depth needs to be fine-tuned, the knob can be removed and the depth adjusted with an open-end wrench. The 7.5 Amp motor is one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful on the market. The powerful motor cuts the slots for the biscuits quickly. I haven’t timed how long it takes to make each slot but let’s just say speed isn’t an issue. I’ve not cut in anything harder than hard maple but I wouldn’t anticipate any problems with harder exotic woods.
This biscuit joiner represents the best value out of the models in our test because it comes with an extra blade that can be used to cut FF mini-biscuit slots. This makes it capable of cutting all sizes of slots. A threaded stop can be adjusted to fine-tune slot sizes. Changing the blade was easier than on most of the tools and is described in Porter-Cable’s well-illustrated manual. The fence is versatile, with a full range of angles for 0 to 135 degrees, and easy to adjust to angles over 90 degrees. Although the 1-3/8-in. maximum height adjustment is average, this is one of only a few tools that comes with a plastic thickness plate. Attached to the fence, the thickness plate makes it easy to center biscuits in 1/2-in. stock. This tool is a little larger and heavier than most, but it has comfortable handles that made it easy to use for extended periods of time. The dust port and bag aren’t great on this tool, but the port is sized to accept a standard 1-in. vacuum hose, which improved dust collection.
There were a couple of complaints about the dust bag that comes with the Porter Cable 557. People have expected it to collect all the dust and chips that are expelled while working with wood when in fact no other plate joiner kit is able to do it that way. The best advice given by one reviewer is that this issue can be easily beaten by hooking up a shop vacuum to the port which allows you to concentrate on the task at hand rather than trying to evade the chips and sawdust flying out of your tool. You will then be provided with a cleaner work space instead.
If there is a common gripe about biscuit joiners it seems to stem from inconsistent biscuit thickness. I have only used Porter Cable biscuits, so I’ll include them as part of the review. Once I cut a few slots on the board I usually dump out a handful of biscuit to start test fitting the biscuit. This may sound unnecessary but in my experience, it helps in glue up. If your biscuit is too thick you will have trouble fitting the joint together, if it is too loose the joint is compromised and the panel might not maintain the proper alignment. If other brands of biscuits are better, please let me know. Although this method works for me.
