Nervy News 4: Roman Polanski, Fugitive Pedophile by Gene Lalor
We’ve all heard that dog bites man isn’t newsworthy but that man bites dog is. Likewise, we’ve heard of other stories which are so banal we wonder why the editor publishes them and stories which strike a chord as classic examples of overreaching and obnoxiousness.
All the beautiful people, dilettantes, and Hollywood has-beens are gathering at the Festival de Cannes to pass judgement on 2010′s best films.
Well, almost all since one of their number won’t be in attendance this year. Film director Roman Polanski will be home alone in Switzerland under house arrest pending possible extradition to finally face the music for violating a child 33 years ago.

His Polish, French, and Hollywood defenders have been aghast ever since Polanski was arrested last year on an outstanding warrant in the United States. He was originally charged with drugging, raping, and sodomizing a 13 year old girl in Jack Nicholson’s mansion in 1977.
He was allowed to plead guilty to statutory rape then fled the country the following year and has been hiding out in France ever since.
Just this week, a British actress came forward to dispel the notion that the 1977 sex attack was an isolated incident. Charlotte Lewis, who won’t be seeing many acting roles in the foreseeable future, revealed that Polanski committed similar acts of pedophilia on her when she was just 16: http://tiny.cc/6ir51
Undismayed, at the Cannes festival some of Polanski’s buddies got together and drew up a petition calling for freeing Polanski from his house bondage which is far more comfortable than the lodgings accorded his fellow child predators who lacked his fame and are incarcerated.
With serial molestor Woody Allen no doubt in the forefront, “The petition, posted on a website overseen by French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy, asks for ‘justice’ from the Swiss authorities. Cannes participants who’ve already put pen to paper for Polanski include Jean-Luc Godard, actor-director Mathieu Amalric, Bertrand Tavernier and Olivier Assayas.”
Those superstars of philosophy and moviedom weren’t joined by Michael Douglas and others. The naysayers had reasons that “were mixed” but Douglas forthrightly said, “It would be ‘unfair’ for him to sign a petition for ‘somebody who did break the law:’ ” http://tiny.cc/5fh23
Michael Douglas is too big a star for Hollywood to blacklist but his refusal to support Polanski still does show there’s a glimmer of hope for the Left Coast.
More bad news for Roman: The head honchos at Cannes effectively said, “No comment” on the petition.
