The Earthquake in Japan Measuring 9.0: Surviving the Ordeal and the Trauma Inflicted
Japan encountered an enormous earthquake and resulting tsunami on March 11, 2011. It is estimated that there are at least 20,000 people that have either been identified as deceased or are missing. The survivors of this disaster have faced many challenges including emotional and coping difficulties, financial strain, physical injuries, lack of resources, and many more. Even though many people will appear to return to relatively normal life post quake, some will endure grave psychological problems, according to leading psychologists.
The ones with a high degree of psychological risk are the survivors with:
- Trauma from the past that has gone untreated or is unresolved
- Psychological disorders that have gone untreated
- A mental or mood disorder like Major Depression that was a pre-existing condition
- Coping skills that are either impaired or non-existent
- None or very little established support network
Common survivor experiences following a disaster like the Japan earthquake may include:
–Feelings of unreality
–Mood variability
–Disruption in normal sleeping patterns
–Severely decreased appetite
–Being on edge
–Greater reactions to trauma triggers (for example: aftershocks)
–Shock
The first organized psychiatric trauma response effort was initiated by the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan. Since Japan’s 2011 earthquake, psychiatric teams have gone into the area and assisted those in need. However, the main priority of the relief effort by the mental health professionals have been to address the physical needs before taking on the mental health needs. It is not uncommon for those that survive a disaster to not be able to deal with their emotions when they are still in need of the basic staples such as food and shelter. Even with all of the relief efforts that have been launched, it is most likely that the psychological symptoms of the survivors will continue for years.
Two great advantages in Japan’s favor for their rebuilding are their sense of community and their strong family values. Both physical and psychological healing is necessary for those affected and may very well be expedited by their emphasis on community support and teamwork. This support network seen in Japan through this disaster may serve as a model for other societies who endure similar circumstances. The survival of that community may count on it.
