Pineapple Sweetens Up Raw Food Diets by Groshan Fabiola
Anyone who thinks raw food diets are lacking flavor, fun and sweetness simply needs to eat a pineapple in all its unadulterated glory to realize how wrong that assumption is. This tropical fruit is a must for any raw food diet list. The cylindrical fruit’s waxy rind can be found in varying colors from reddish to orangish to yellow to green, with the flesh ranging in color from white to the familiar yellow. It is a sweet treat that can perk up any raw food vegan diet that is lacking fun and flavor.
As you will see in many raw food cookbooks, pineapple is a highly versatile food that can be used in deserts as well as savory meals and snacks. There are many types of pineapple to choose from. The most popular is probably the Del Monte gold, which was bred in the 1960s to be twice as sweet as other pineapple varieties. Anyone who loves sweets and the flavors of the tropics should add this pineapple to their raw food diet list.
Other varieties of pineapple include the Baby Sugar Loaf, which is native to Mexico and is very popular because it can be harvested while the rind is still yellow and shipped without compromising its storage life. The Kona Sugarloaf pineapple is another one of the sweeter varieties that people eating raw food vegan diets can use for their desert recipes, but only if it is grown locally since it’s too fragile to be shipped. Other varieties include the Natal Queen (known for its small tender core and juicy aromatic flesh), Red Spanish pineapple (most popular in the West Indies, Mexico and Venezuela), Smooth Cayenne (most widely grown in Hawaii), and the South African Baby (the smaller pineapple).
Pineapples can measure anywhere from three 12 inches and weigh between one and 10 pounds. You can find plenty of great recipes in raw food cookbooks, or just eat them cut up and plain as nature intended.
