The Neglected History of the Guitar
Ever tried meditating on the roots of your prized guitar? Well, truth is, it wasn’t originally invented to look exactly like what you hold in your hands today. It has had quite a history that dates back to the forgotten civilizations of the Mesopotamian era. The first ever guitar ever made originated from Iraq, only to reappear around two millennia later. Back then, it was still known as Mesopotamia. In the vicinity of an excavation area, archaeologists discovered some caves with drawings of humans with what appeared to be string like instruments resembling a guitar. Another stringed instrument, resembling the guitar of today, was found in a tomb after the expansion of the Roman Empire a couple thousand years later. The Middle Age’s version of the guitar proved to be popular as well during that time. There were two designs that were widely used in those days, resembling either French or German influence. One design had a sound hole, a round belly and a stout neck.The other was more geometric and straight-edged. These were discovered in church ruins and tombs in England. Most people believe that these were actually influenced by the string instruments brought in by the Moors to Europe in the early 8th century. In terms of the maturation of the guitar, Spain was the main center as it was located where the Moors initially started their invasion. The first kind of guitar that ever gained popularity was the Vihuela that initially had twelve frets. People then began making tabs so everyone and anyone could play it without any difficulty. Like the lute, the guitar became the instrument of choice during the resistance. If you brood over it, the guitar’s present image was made from these actions of the past. During the 17th and 18th century, Louis XIV made the guitar gain even more popularity. Among the European elite, it was a must to master the art of playing the guitar. About a century later, we see that the guitar has evolved into the same kind of guitar we see on every street corner and stage today. This became so popular that it spread to America, followed of course by everyone else. People have come to appreciate the guitar at present. Freedom of expression through music became the biggest thing. The guitar became the main instrument in the music scene. As more and more people wanted to hear the guitar in songs, musicians wanted more from the guitar – they wanted it louder and stronger. It was because of it that guitar manufacturers developed the electric guitar. The guitar remains the top choice for beginners in the music industry, for any music type. Guitars and their players share a great relationship, one that outlasts time and culture. When the need for self-expression arises, the guitar remains to be the top instrument used.
