Wooden Jewelry Boxes: the Beauty of Good Oak Burl
There is an unbeatable charm surrounding wooden jewelry boxes besides their innate durability. Not only is it a safe place for expensive jewelry, it also serves as a showcase and a topic of conversation. Making jewelry boxes from straight wood is quite easy, but crafting something from burl wood needs skill.
Trees such as oak, maple, mahogany, walnut among others develop burls. A burl is nothing but an additional growth on a tree as a result of some stress. When buds are injured, their growth is stunted and the bark of the tree covers it up forming a burl.
In order to keep the pattern of the burl intact, the tree will have to be cut carefully. Spots above and below the burl are marked off and only then is the tree cut. The burl is then separated from the bark and opened up based on the direction of its pattern. They will need to be milled once they are harvested.
No matter which wood they come from, burls are expensive. Veneers are made of these as well. Burls come in a range of shapes, making some of them easy to work with and others needing skill and concentration to help create something special.
Common oak burl colors are red, white, and black.
Among all the varieties, it is only the American oak burl that be stained. Making a choice from the wide range of colors becomes difficult as each one is very beautiful. Innovative designs can be cut into these burls with some specialized machinery.
The grain and the uniqueness of the live edges are what determine the shape and size of the box that will be made from it. Basically boxes made from oak burl can be medium sized at the most, and no bigger. The basic characteristics of burl wood are the main reason for this. In burl wood, the grain is irregular and there are also some voids in it.
Seasonal wood movements too influence the size of the box to be created. Despite being hardwood, oak burls can easily be handled with the right kind of tools. Mitered joints are a unique way of making high quality and strong oak burl boxes. These can be easily used with a spline and some rabbet joints.
A soft lining is placed in all burl boxes to help protect the precious ornaments that are stored in them. Oak burl turns out relatively expensive because it is rare. The effort that goes into creating something unique from this kind of wood is what adds to its price. You make a style statement with oak burls.
